Budget playbook

Whole genome sequencing on a budget — the under-$200 game plan

$180 for clinical-grade whole genome sequencing sounds like an internet-scam price. It's not. Here's the legitimate way to hit that number, step by step.

"Whole genome sequencing for under $200" sounds like an internet-scam headline. It isn't. Dante Labs' flash-sale pricing plus stackable discounts genuinely puts clinical-grade 30× WGS at roughly $162–$182 depending on exchange rate and current promotion. Every element of that price is legitimate and publicly disclosed.

Here's the exact sequence of moves to get there.

The maths, laid out plainly

Dante standard€399 (~$430 USD)
Flash sale€169 (~$182 USD)
Flash + GENOME 10%€152 (~$164 USD)
ShippingFree worldwide
Add-onsSkip — not needed

Under $200 all-in requires two things: a flash-sale window, and the GENOME code applied at checkout. Both are legitimate, both stack, neither requires anything clever.

Move 1: Time the purchase to a flash-sale window

Dante's €169 flash sale runs several times a year, most reliably around DNA Day (25 April) and Black Friday/Cyber Monday (late November). These two windows have run every year since 2020. There are typically two or three additional mid-year sale windows at slightly higher promotional prices (€179–€229).

If you're within 6–10 weeks of one of these windows, wait. If you're 3+ months out and don't want to wait, apply GENOME to the current standard price for a still-meaningful €40 discount. Under-$200 pricing requires the flash sale — there's no way around that.

Set a calendar reminder for two dates each year:

Move 2: Apply the GENOME code at checkout

At checkout, apply promo code GENOME for a further 10% off whatever price is currently displayed. The code stacks on flash-sale pricing — unlike many coupons that exclude promotional pricing. Applied to a flash-sale €169, the code brings the total to approximately €152.

The GENOME code is our affiliate code as this site is a Dante Labs partner. It does not affect your price beyond the 10% discount — commission is paid by Dante out of their revenue on the sale, not added to your invoice.

Move 3: Buy the base test only

The base Dante Genome Test includes:

Do not add anything at checkout. Dante's upsells at checkout are typically re-cuts of variants already covered in the base 200+ report bundle. If you want additional analyses down the line, do them from your VCF using free tools (see our post on 12 free VCF analysis tools) rather than paying Dante extra at the point of sale.

Move 4: Pay in euros, refuse dynamic currency conversion

Dante prices in euros. At checkout, if you're offered "pay in your local currency" via Dynamic Currency Conversion, decline it. DCC rates are set by the payment processor with a spread of 3–7%, always worse than what your credit card would charge you at Visa or Mastercard interbank rates.

Paying in EUR and letting your card handle the conversion typically saves 2–3% versus DCC. On a $180 order that's $4–5 — not huge, but free money.

Move 5: Ship to a non-EU address if you have the option

EU/UK addresses attract VAT at checkout — 20% for UK buyers. Non-EU addresses (US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, UAE, Japan, and most others) do not have VAT added.

If you're currently in the EU/UK but have a non-EU address available (a US relative, a Canadian friend, a work address in a non-EU country), shipping to that address saves the 20%. Your kit gets forwarded on to you afterward. Legally straightforward — the VAT question turns on delivery address, not user address.

For most buyers this move isn't practical and can be skipped. If it happens to apply to you, it's worth another 15–25%.

What the final receipt looks like

Realistic sequence for a US buyer during a Black Friday flash sale:

ItemAmount
Dante Genome Test 30× (Black Friday price)€169.00
GENOME code discount (10%)−€16.90
Subtotal€152.10
VAT (US delivery)€0.00
Shipping€0.00
Total (EUR)€152.10
Approx USD equivalent~$164

What if you cannot wait for a flash sale?

Applied to the standard €399 price, GENOME brings the total to €359 (~$387). That's not under $200, but it is a legitimate discount on legitimate current pricing, and the kit ships on the standard timeline. If the sequencing timing is critical — a pregnancy decision, a specific medical question — take the €359 today rather than gambling on a window that may not open when you need it.

What this money buys, in perspective

$164 for a 30× whole genome sequence with all three raw data formats is roughly:

Per base pair sequenced, $164 works out to approximately $0.0000000256 per base — roughly 15 million times cheaper than the Human Genome Project's $2.7 billion in 2003. The technology deflated. Your job is to catch a flash-sale window and apply a code. That's it.
