Price without the stale sale hype

Genome sequencing prices change. The buying logic shouldn't.

Compare the sequencing itself, raw-data access, report bundles, shipping, turnaround, re-analysis and privacy. A flash-sale sticker price is only one part of the cost.

Real cost checklist

Six numbers matter more than the headline price.

  • Sequencing depth and technology. What exactly is being sequenced and to what advertised depth?
  • Raw-data access. Are FASTQ/BAM/CRAM/VCF downloads included or charged separately?
  • Reports. Are health reports included, sold as a bundle, or unlocked one by one?
  • Shipping, tax and duties. International pricing may not equal your final landed cost.
  • Re-analysis. Does the provider charge when its interpretation pipeline changes?
  • Your time. A cheaper provider can still be a bad fit if turnaround or support does not match your needs.

Don't know whether WGS is worth it?

Start with the goal, not the product.

If ancestry matching is the job, a lower-cost genotyping service can be the rational choice. If broad raw-data ownership is the job, WGS makes more sense. If the question could change medical care, test selection and interpretation matter more than consumer pricing.
